"Wow! This place is incredible. What a fantastic selection of books. How long have you been here?"
BookBuyers Mountain View
Rammurti and Sita Reed opened BookBuyers in 1990, in the Old San Andreas Health Clinic building on Cowper Street in Palo Alto. Rammurti, who opened his first bookstore in 1967 in Chicago, was then the CEO of a computer retailer, and had been looking for a new opportunity a little closer to his heart. After the first few months the couple moved the store to the old Bank of America building on Emerson Street, just off University. There the store grew, adding calendars, computer books, vintage magazines, music CDs and art prints to the offerings of books, tapes and records.
After three years, the building on the corner of Emerson and University was slated to be torn down. Unable to find a landlord willing to rent a large space to a used book store along University, the entire shop - stock, fixtures and all - was moved into the former Hobby Shop at the old San Antonio mall which was empty and awaiting demolition. After about five months in storage, a new home in Mountain View on Castro Street was found for the store. Here we have been playing with books, happily, ever since. We hope you can join us at one of the best and largest used book stores in California. We look forward to your visit to BookBuyers Mountain View.
BookBuyers OnLine
In response to many customer requests, Rammurti and Sita launched BookBuyers OnLine was in 2001. Offering a completely separate stock of unusual and hard-to-find items, it now lists over 100,000 items with Abebooks, Alibris, Amazon and Barnes & Noble. BookBuyers OnLine specializes in a wide variety of scientific, technical and academic materials with an emphasis on periodicals. In fact, BookBuyers offers more NASA related material than any other bookstore online - thanks in part to the many NASA-Ames employees who trade at our bricks-and-mortar store. We also offer collectible items in metaphysics, the occult, obscure languages, comics, and in unusual linguistic materials.
BookBuyers Monterey
The Bookworm in Monterey was an old fashioned neighborhood bookstore of the ilk that has mostly gone away since the turn of the millennium and the rise of monster bookstores and online shopping. Its owner, just wanted it "to go to a good home" rather than have it disappear. She pestered Rammurti until he, and Sita, finally went to see it in late 2002. The rescue opportunity was irresistible. New flower boxes, additional lighting, custom cases for paperbacks and books-on-tape, and hundreds of our trademark calendars, gave it a new incarnation as BookBuyers Monterey in January, 2003. Situated on a corner near the Monterey Aquarium, it specializes in John Steinbeck and the Monterey Bay area.
