The Trading/Buying Counter in Mountain View is Open ALL Fridays and Saturdays (except no buying in December). We begin trading at 10 am and continue to accept customers until we are fully scheduled or until 7pm. You are advised always to come as early as possible for overall faster service and an earlier pick up later the same day. After we check you in, you can plan to come back later, but you must return, as what we do not accept MUST BE PICKED UP THE SAME DAY. We cannot accept "donations" of what we did not take. Your trade slip must be taken to the cashier to set up your account and all of your remaining items should be removed from the store.

We will consider any books or media, but are especially interested in:

  • Non-Fiction - Eastern & World Religions, Esoteric and Occult, Crafts, Art, Gardening, Cookbooks, Technical, Transportation, and Children's books
  • Pocket Paperback (Mass Market) - Fiction and Non-Fiction, especially paperback Mysteries & Sci-Fi, any date if in great condition
  • Music & Movies - All Types of Music, especially classical and jazz, CDs in excellent condition, Cassettes, Books-on-Tape, Videos, DVD's, and Laser Discs. We are interested in 33 1/3 LP records, but only if in pristine condition.
  • Software & Video Games - especially Mac OS X and Win Me/XP. Also console (XBox) & PC (98+) games
  • Computer Books - The more current the better, some older general computing and programming books are ok. Particularly looking for books on UNIX, LINUX, Photoshop 6/7/CS/Elements, Perl, Tcl, Ruby, Phython, PHP, UML, Java 1.3+, C++, and any titles from the last 2 years.

CREDIT: Store trade credit can always be given for books, CD's, DVD's, records, cassettes, videos, software, and select magazines. We accept only those items that we think we can sell and of which we have few or no duplicates. The amount offered in trade credit is based on our estimate of the price we will charge for the item, how long it will take to sell, availability, and condition. Your trade credit remains valid until used; it will never expire.

GENERAL TRADE CREDIT: Offered for all items except music CD's & DVD's. May be used for anything in the store with Three Exceptions:

  • Music CD's & DVD's
  • Current Year Calendars, Book Covers, and other new specialty or promotional items
  • Items marked "N" in front of the price. The "N" (Not for General Trade) items consist primarily of large format books, discounted new books and new audio books for which we have paid more than usual. Most "N" items are new; however, many new items are available for general trade credit. Normally "N" items cannot be charged to your general trade account. General trade credit may be used for "N" items by charging your account DOUBLE the marked price. Note that this applies to "N" items only, not music CD's, DVD's, Calendars, etc.

CD TRADE CREDIT: Offered for music CD's & DVD's only and kept in a separate account. You can use this credit for anything in the store.

CASH: Cash is offered for a very limited range of items. We are more likely to pay cash for books in categories in which we specialize or have ongoing shortages. The most likely cash areas are: Music CD's & DVD's, large expensive pictorial books, cookbooks, metaphysics, eastern religions, chess, quilting & crafts, children's hardcover trade editions with dust jackets, fine condition pocket paperback sci-fi and detective mysteries, and current releases in many areas. Cash may be offered for a broader range of items when we buy large collections, libraries, or from estates. In addition, you should note that we offer 1/2 as much in cash as we would have in trade for the same item. We are, however, happy to consider your items for cash.

Additional Tips for the Customer

If you need help getting your books in, bring a friend, or borrow a hand truck, which we have here for your use.

Books are heavy. Large, overfull boxes are dangerous for you and for us. Use smaller boxes and bags. We reccomend office boxes or shopping bags. We don not reccomend using large plastic garbage bags, as they tend to rip, and damage books.

We have no space to hold your books overnight. Plan ahead. Take away all returns by end of business the same day.

When our schedule approaches midnight, we take no more orders. Sometimes, we must stop taking orders earlier than 7pm.

The later you check in, the later your books will be ready. Often scheduled pick-ups are past 9pm up until the close of the store. If you cannot come early and you are not able to come back late, plan to bring your books another buying day.
